What the function of glutamine?

2016-11-08

Glutamine plays a role in a variety of biochemical functions:

1. Protein synthesis, as any other of the 20 proteinogenic amino acids

2. Lipid synthesis, especially by cancer cells.[2][3]

3. Regulation of acid-base balance in the kidney by producing ammonium[4]

4. Cellular energy, as a source, next to glucose[5]

5. Nitrogen donation for many anabolic processes, including the synthesis of purines[1]

6. Carbon donation, as a source, refilling the citric acid cycle.
