  • 1.Antioxidant Activity:

Free radicals bearing oxygen called ROS (reactive oxygen species) are generated in thebiomembrane. While such free radicals remain , they oxidise the surrounding molecules, generating lipoperoxides which damage the biomenbrane. Vitamin E scavenges free radicals and inhibits oxidation and as a result, generation of lipoperoxide is suppressed, i.e. it has antioxidant activity. Among the four kinds of tocopherols, the order of strength of antioxidant activity in vivo is as follows: α larger than β, β larger than γ, γ larger than δ , α - Tocopherol is the strongest.

    2.Biomembrane stabilising activity:

Vitamin E is said to have biomembrane stabilising activity. In addition, it seems that hte side chain (phytyl side chain) of tocopherol has a structural function, in that the side chain of tocopherol sticks to linoleic acid or arachidonic acid and stabilises membrance tissue. In particular, it stabilises red blood cell and platelet membranes, and is therefor said to have a biomembrane stabilising activity.
